The autonomous community of the Basque Country (Euskadi in the local dialect, País Vasco in Spanish) is a region situated in the north-east corner of Spain overlooking the Cantabrian Sea.
The territory counts 5 provinces, with Vitoria-Gasteiz as capital:
- Álava (Araba), capital Vitoria-Gasteiz
- Biscaglia (Bizkaia), capital Bilbao (Bilbo)
- Guipúzcoa (Gipuzkoa), capital San Sebastián (Donostia)
Although the territory of the Basque Country occupies a small area, it is rich of history, art, culture, nature and tradition. Euskadi pullulates of museums, monuments and many interesting sites. Here the Basque idiom is still spoken, and the food tradition is almost a religion. Tourists visiting this region find a completely different image of Spain, far from the stereotypes of bullfights and flamenco, but as well rich of colours and flavours.
The Paesi Bassi enjoy a mild temperate climate which makes this location an ideal destination in every season.
Come discover the joyful and happy atmosphere of hot summer nights livened up by the Ferias, or choose the tranquillity of the warm spring and autumn months. Those who choose to visit the Country in winter will be amazed to find mild days, even if a bit rainy.
Unfortunately the name of this region is often associated with the separatist movement called ETA (Euskadi Ta Askatasun, which means “Basque Country and freedom”), an armed organization which fights for independence from Spain. Despite the delicate political situation, the Basque Country should not be considered as a dangerous destination: if you move cautiously through the Country and avoid public manifestations, the risk to be involved in unpleasant situations is very low.
Do not let anguish take over you during your travel: the Basque Country are a wonderful region so different from the usual chaos of Spain, and they certainly deserve to be visited with calm.
